Welcome to the BURY CINE SOCIETY JOURNAL
8th January
Our first meeting of 2025 (Happy New Year, everybody) began with an examination of some walkie talkie radios that I recently purchased on behalf of the society. We had found on previous filming occasions, when multiple cameras were in use, that there was little or no communication between camera operators. Having several of these little radios should remove that problem. Great fun was had by sending me out of the room (it’s always me) with a radio, while similarly equipped members beamed various messages at me such as; “Can you hear me, mother? or “Come in, number four”. Very amusing - and it did demonstrate the effectiveness of the walkie talkies, if not the comedic talent of the members.
With yours truly allowed back into the room, the entertainment continued with a short documentary I had found about the making of Walt Disney’s 1954 film version of Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, which was that studio’s first feature in CinemaScope.
After surfacing (geddit?), we dived once again - into the Archives this time - for another look at a short animated cartoon, made some years ago by one of our late members, based on Marriott Edgar’s famous poem, Albert and the ‘Eadsman.
Another of his films that received a second viewing was one that members will recall about a little girl who feigns illness so she can pay a visit to a local fairground , which featured an effective combination of black and white and colour cinematography.
We finished off the evening with one of Barry Aldous’ films that he’s shot at an air show some time ago.
